FULLERTON, CA :: On Saturday, May 18, Hope International University held its 107th Commencement Ceremony, proudly conferred degrees upon the largest graduating class in HIU’s rich 90-hear history. The class of 2019 includes 407 undergraduate and graduate degrees (combined), 31 Hispanic Ministry Certificates, and 102 ESL Diplomas. In all, 540 students successfully completed their chosen course of study. Drawn from a global student body of nearly 4,000 students representing 42 states and 16 countries, these graduates now join over 14,000 alumni who carry HIU’s legacy of exceptional servant leadership to locations across the globe.
During the ceremony, undergraduate student speaker Meghan Kenny (Bachelor of Arts in Business Management) reminded graduates that they are set apart by their experiences and education at Hope. Online undergraduate Taylor Toth (Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies) shared highlights of her academic journey, and encouraged the audience to trust in God’s plans instead of relying on their own. Graduate student Brett Taylor (Master of Education) implored the audience to love others through their work.
HIU outgoing President, Dr. John Derry, shared an address focused on “stewardship.” After 16 years in office, this commencement marks Dr. Derry’s final ceremony before his retirement in August. He shared inspirational words of wisdom based on key Proverbs that have guided his career. Dr. Derry also challenged graduates to envision their own retirement and contemplate what they would like to be able to say looking back on their lives and careers.
Founded in 1928, HIU commemorates the completion of its 90th academic year. The Spring 2019 Commencement Ceremony marks Hope’s 45th year in Fullerton, where the University diligently maintains its commitment to empowering students through Christian higher education to serve the church and impact the world for Christ.
