As HIU freshmen, Tyler Patterson (BA ’11) and Hughie Hughes (BA ’11) began passing out provisions to Skid Row’s homeless in the back alleys of downtown Los Angeles. From those humble-yet-passionate beginnings, they founded Povertees, now a full-fledged non-profit social enterprise whose employees and volunteers are compassionately involved in the lives of LA’s chronically homeless community.
Over the past 7 years, the Povertees team has developed a program that provides jobs with on-the-job training and support for women transitioning out of homelessness. 88 percent of the company’s revenue is put directly back the program. In addition, Povertees also provides services like transportation and assistance with housing paperwork.
