Battling Burnout

Name: Lee McClanathan

Current Status: Alumni

Graduation Year: 1972

During the past 45 years of marriage and ministry, Lee (BS ‘72, MA ‘78) and Loralee (BS ’72) McClanathan have experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of pastoral life. This includes depression, bitterness, burnout, health crises, and other challenges that are all-too-common for vocational ministers.

Over the course of his career in ministry, Lee has pastored growing churches in IL, CA & AR, helping people become devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Though Lee had retired, he is now back on staff at Northeast Christian Church in Rockford, IL, as a liaison for pastoral care and encouragement. (He was formerly NCC’s lead pastor for 11 years.)

Recently, Lee was invited to join Standing Stone Ministry to provide care for pastors and ministry leaders, their spouses, and families. “My vision and desire is to help reduce the number of pastors that leave the ministry because of depression and burnout.”

Pastor Lee says, “I can’t think of a better way to bring my ministry days to an end, then to invest my life in pastors and ministry leaders through Standing Stone.  After much prayer I’m convinced that I have been called to this vital ministry.”

After battling stage four lung cancer in 2017, Loralee is now cancer free and continues to mentor their 2 grown children and 5 grandchildren.
