Mentoring the Next Generation

Name: Bryan Sands

Current Status: Alumni

Graduation Year: 2001

HIU’s Director of Campus Ministries, Bryan Sands (BA ‘01), has a deep commitment to mentoring young adults. Along with campus responsibilities and monthly sermons at A Place for Worship, Sands just released his first book, Everyone Loves Sex So Why Wait? – A Discussion in Sexual Faithfulness, currently the #1 Hot New Release in Health Teaching Materials on Amazon.com. Bryan shares, “The goal of this book is to give a new perspective to waiting. When millennials read this book I’d hope they would develop a fresh outlook on this biblical truth, and for pastors and leaders to have a way to discuss sex and sexual faithfulness in a new way.”

At HIU, Bryan oversees chapel, small groups, mission trips, and mentors students. On a typical work day Bryan is often visited by students to chat, pray, and talk about issues. In his 6 years at HIU, Sands has led over 30 Amor Ministries outreach trips, serving along HIU students to build homes for families in Mexico.

“I have students that I have connected with while at HIU that still keep in contact with me to this day,” Bryan says of the relationships he’s built with the students over the years.

Bryan was a Biblical Studies major and says that his education at HIU helped him to think critically and carefully about various presuppositions he developed while growing up. He attests that the HIU motto, “We’ll teach you how to think not what to think,” is an accurate depiction of the critical development that occurs with HIU students.

Sands’ ministry experience includes over fifteen years working within the public school system, church, university, and was awarded HIU’s “Servant of the Year” award at the 2016 Christmas Luncheon.
