After working in the electrical industry for 36 years, John Schramm (B.S. 2006) decided to go back to school to earn his bachelor’s degree. Schramm was attracted to Hope’s School of Professional Studies program because of the potential it held for him to complete his degree quickly while still working full time. What he didn’t expect was to find his life heading in a whole new direction.
In the midst of the Human Development program, Schramm felt the need to begin pursuing a completely different career path. He was drawn to the field of hospice when one of his classes, “Transition, Loss and Death,” incorporated a focus on hospice care. Seeing this as an opportunity to use his spiritual gifts to truly help families facing final care for their loved ones, Schramm accepted a staff position with Hospice Care of California, Placentia, shortly after his graduation. His new role has him working both as an Admissions Counselor and as Community Liaison. “I am completely blessed at this point in my life to have a job that I am committed to totally. I recognize that my transition from where I was to where I am now would not have been possible without my degree, and I can’t stress strongly enough what a great experience my HIU adventure was for me.”
