After 20 exemplary years of employment at Hope International University, Sharon Carter (BS ’95) retired from her post as Executive Assistant to the President. Hired by Dr. Roy Lawson in 2000, Sharon served under the last three HIU Presidents: Lawson, Dr. John Derry and Dr. Paul Alexander.
Sharon was known and beloved for her cheerful attitude, generous spirit, and compassion. She received the Servant Leadership Award, an annual University recognition given to one faculty member and one staff member, as nominated by their peers. Beyond her specified duties, Sharon often assisted with University and community events. Her interaction and relationships with countless alumni, community and church leaders, students, and employees was an invaluable asset to the University.
“Sharon Carter is an exceptional servant leader. Serving Senior Pastors and College Presidents is no easy task, yet she did so gracefully and graciously for decades,” remarked President Alexander. “With a heart of gold and strong sense of pride in doing things well, she served tirelessly and selflessly day in and day out. I consider it a privilege to have worked with her. I wish her all the best in retirement.”
Just months into her retirement, Sharon’s husband, John Carter, fell gravely ill and passed away. They married on Christmas Day, 2002. John attended and volunteered at HIU events alongside Sharon, and befriended many in the HIU community. For many years Sharon and John have beem among HIU's most generous and faithful donors.
Sharon has begun the process of moving back to Ohio, where she’s originally from, to live near family and close friends.
