This summer, HIU is hosting over 70 international students from Dongseo University, Kyungnam College of Information and Technology, and Chungwoon University for Summer ESL Camp. From June 23rd to July 18th the group is participating in recreational activities and attending American Culture classes in order to practice their English conversation and experience American culture.
HIU students, faculty, and staff engage the visiting students from the three South Korean universities in on and off-campus activities including field-trips to the Getty Museum, Griffith Observatory, Fullerton Arboretum, Universal Studios, and Huntington Beach. HIU leaders also host on-campus events like flag football at the park, basketball in the gym, pool party, and dinners.
“Students can improve their English skills by having conversations during planned activity times and learn many aspects of American culture, values, pastimes, food, and more. Our activity leaders interact with and learn about another culture from the international students as well,” says Director of International Student Programs, Judy Kim, of the dual benefits for both the guests and their hosts. Since 2014, Kim has led this annual intercultural program which dates back to the summer of 2000.
