Prior to his tenure as Superintendent of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), Dr. Doug Domene served in a number of administrative, teaching, and coaching positions. While exploring the field of Christian higher education as an adjunct professor, he got to know HIU’s leaders and mission, and felt growing desire to help fulfill that mission, ultimately leading to Domene’s recent acceptance of the invitation to become the new Dean of HIU’s College of Education.
“I loved the Superintendent job,” he said, “but I’ve always dreamed of working on a university campus, preparing the finest educators possible, whether they serve in the public or private schools.”
Dr. Domene is convinced that teaching is one of the greatest opportunities for students to become servant leaders. He emphasizes the importance of helping future teachers live their faith, whether in public or private schools, through kindness, caring, excellence, and living a life that is above reproach.
“I’m so pleased that Dr. Domene has joined us”, comments Dr. Paul Alexander, HIU’s Vice President for Academic Affairs. ”Doug brings thirty years of Educational Administration to bear on his role here as Dean of the College of Education. His reputation in Southern California for excellence and professionalism is simply stellar. I’m most excited for way Doug deals with students. He loves to see them succeed and will actively assist them in networking opportunities to help them launch their careers as servant leaders in the classroom.”
Domene has a long-held affinity for Hope International University, rooted in his enrollment at Hope four decades ago. He had been a member of the men’s baseball team for a year, before its hiatus. In a kind of poetic twist, baseball just returned to HIU this past academic year. The HIU Royals host their home games on the baseball field at Valencia High School, which is part of the PLYUSD where Domene served as District Superintendent for the past four years.
