commuter resources

Commuter StudentWe love our commuter students and seek to make HIU feel as much like home to you as possible. Check out all that we have to offer our commuter students.

Places to Hang Out
Commuters are welcome everywhere on campus. When you want a quiet place to study, the Library or Lambda Lounge (located on the second floor in between the Residence Halls) may be your best bet. The Nu Lounge is the commuter hot spot for connecting and preparing food. The newly renovated Activities Room (located in the Student Center) is connected to The Royal Hub where food can be purchased with flex points or cash. It also has pool tables and games as well as a TV room with a Wii gaming system. Many students take advantage of the Southern California weather and hang out or study on one of the many benches and green lawns across campus.

Nu Lounge
This lounge is conveniently located right in the middle of the academic buildings on campus. With comfy couches, tables and chairs, a refrigerator and microwave, and wireless internet, this lounge is the ideal home away from home for our commuter students. There is also a bulletin board in the Nu Lounge with info to connect commuters with the resources and relationships they need.

Eating on Campus
Commuter students may purchase flex points for use in the cafeteria or Royal Hub café. If you add $100 of flex points to your ID card you will receive $20 extra dollars in flex points! The cafeteria operates as all-you-care-to-eat and entrance fees vary by meal time. The Royal Hub café provides quick and easy food options at a pay-per-item price. Some commuters choose to bring their lunch and store it in the refrigerator in the Nu Lounge and/or use the microwave provided. You may purchase flex points during NSO or any time in the business office.

Parking on Campus
Parking permits are required at all times for vehicles parked on Hope property. You will have the opportunity to purchase a parking pass during registration. The current rate is $100 per semester.

Fitness Center
Give your brain a rest and exercise your muscles at the Fitness Center, located inside the Student Center, or attend an aerobics class with some friends.

Showers
Showers are available for all students in the gym locker rooms.

Mail Room
Avoid lines at city post offices and visit our full service Mail Room in the Student Center. Buy stamps, send packages, and check your personal mailbox here.

Book Store
So you need an extra folder, bag of chips, pen, or simply a book to read at your leisure? Stop by the Hope Bookstore! Film processing service is even available here.

Computers
Public computers are located in the Library’s computer lab. Printing is also available in the Library. Wireless internet service is available throughout campus. You will receive a username and password at New Student Orientation.

How do I access the wireless network on my mobile device? How do I get a campus email account? What if my computer needs repair? We have an excellent department that can answer just about any computer-related question you can throw at them. You can call Information Systems at (714) 879-3901 ext. 2607 or email them at ishelpdesk@hiu.edu

How Can I get Involved & Connected at Hope?

Good Morning Commuter
Twice per semester ASB hosts a free breakfast for commuting students before or after chapel. This is a time to connect with other commuters and give feedback to your Commuter Senator.

Adopt-A-Commuter Program
Do you fear you might miss out on all Hope has to offer because you will not be living in the dorms? Put your worries aside because you can be “adopted” by a residence hall. The Residence Assistant (R.A.) for that hall and other residents will include you in hall functions ranging from GYRAD (Get Your Roommate a Date) to Nerf wars to worship nights.

Campus Events
Get Involved! Go to sporting events, participate in intramural sports, attend student affairs or campus ministry events. Even residence life has events that all students can enjoy regardless of whether they live in the dorms or not.

Commuter Events
From time to time, commuter-only events will be held on campus to help connect you to one another and have fun as a community.

Campus Ministries
A variety of spiritual formation and ministry opportunities are offered through Campus Ministries, located in the Upper Student Center. These range from small groups called Barnabas or Formation groups, to missions trips, to local outreach opportunities.

Associated Student Body
ASB is our student government that is made up of a president, vice president and senators who represent various interest groups for students. You can apply for any of the positions in the spring for the following school year.

Student Clubs
Join any number of clubs that range from fun to serious. A Club Fair is sponsored by Student Affairs at the beginning of each semester. You may also form new clubs. Come by the S.A. office (located in the Lower Student Center) for more information on how to create a club.

Involvement & Volunteer Opportunities
Join the newspaper or yearbook staff, team up with the International Students department to build relationships with our international students, volunteer with Solidarity to reach out to Fullerton’s low-income neighborhoods, or serve on the worship team for Chapel. The opportunities are endless!
