B.A. English Literature

At Hope, the English Literature program equips students with the skills needed for articulate and appropriate written communication, advanced critical thinking, literary analysis, the presentation of formal research, and an understanding of the use of dramatic art forms in the communication of values and ideas. The program adheres to a prescriptive, competency-based curriculum in English grammar and usage, and it offers a varied continuum of courses providing critical analysis of the world’s great classic and contemporary literature. English Literature students will also develop skills in dramatic writing and performance.

The English Literature major is a multi-faceted major that leads to many career choices, and provides a strong foundational base of knowledge. This program is perfectly suited for students who wish to pursue graduate studies leading to the completion of the Secondary Teaching Credential, the M.A. or the Ph.D. in literature, or its related fields. The B.A. in English Literature program is 125 units.

"Creative writing has been a passion my entire life, but it never came to fruition until I came to HIU and had a class with Cora Alley. She encouraged me to keep writing and even helped me start a Creative Writing program on campus. The faculty and staff have been supportive and excited about my future and always ask me about my current projects."

"Not too many places are so supportive and encouraging in seeing people reach for their dreams. Through the encouragement of supportive faculty members, I even wrote and am directing a musical that we will be performing here at Hope."

"HIU is the best community I could have ever asked for. My life as a student and a woman in Christ has grown tremendously all because of my friends and the staff on this campus. The program has definitely prepared me for my future career as a High School English teacher. I couldn't have asked for anything more."
