Resources and Services
Student Services exists to provide programs and services that impact the quality of student life - supporting academic and professional success, spiritual formation and commitments to living in community. The following identify those services more pertinent to the needs and interests of School of Professional Studies students.
I.D. Cards
An I.D. card is issued to each student at the start of their program and is required for access to the main campus parking lot and the Library's Information Commons. I.D. services are provided by the SPS program office. If a card is lost, there is a $15 replacement fee. I.D. cards are processed in the Library.
Library
The Darling Library provides a wide variety of resources and services that support the information needs of Hope students. The library houses books, periodicals, CDs, and DVDs and provides access to eBooks and online subscription research databases with thousands of full-text articles. The Information Commons serves as a computer research lab equiped with scanners, web cams, printers, and software programs such as word processing, Logos Bible Software, and SPSS. Other services include FAXing, photcopying, and free wireless. The CSUF library is also available for use by Hope students with a Hope student I.D. card and an authorization letter from the Darling Library. For more information visit the library's website.
Student Center
The Lawson-Fulton Student Center, located in the center of the Fullerton main campus, houses the Darling Pavilion (gymnasium), bookstore, Dining Commons (cafeteria), an aerobics room, weight room, snack bar and various Student Services offices. The Student Center is open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 12 midnight. Vending machines, microwaves, restroom facilities, ping-pong, televisions, and comfortable seating are also available for students to utilize.
Bookstore
The Hope Bookstore stocks school materials, gift and stationery items, assorted T-shirt and school memorabilia, as well as Sunday School materials, personal items, snacks, and books for Bible study, devotional and topical interests. Film processing service is also available. Call first to check store hours at (714) 879-3901 ext. 1233. Visit the website
Computer Labs
A twelve-system lab is also located on the Fullerton main campus in Room 122B. Your I.D. card is required for access to the lab. IBM-compatible systems are provided for the use of Microsoft Office products, as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer and other applications required for instructional support. A schedule is posted at all times near the lab entrance. Because the schedule can change based on current needs, be sure to check for open times to effectively plan for lab usage at (714) 879 3901 ext. 1615.
Health Services
The Office of Student Services assists students in accessing health services from local medical health providers. A student health insurance plan is available to all University students, providing availability to sickness and accident coverage for them and their dependents. A brochure listing the current year premium and extent of coverage may be requested from the Office of Student Services.
Students with Learning Disabilities
The policy of Hope International University concerning students with learning disabilities is as follows:
Learning disabilities shall be any documented physical, mental, emotional, or cognitive impairment that has an adverse effect on a student's ability to acquire, process, and or recall typical college class content. Documentation must be recent, within the past three years of enrollment, and must have been completed by an appropriate professional, e.g., State licensed psychologist, school psychologist, MSW with appropriate training and background, MFT with appropriate training and background. Documentation shall include both appropriate tests of learning abilities as well as interview material.
Students with known learning disabilities will only be admitted to Hope if they meet all admission criteria, and then only after full disclosure that Hope does not have any special programs or dedicated assistance to them in consideration of their learning disability. Standard tutoring is available, but not such that it would take learning disability into consideration. It is recognized that some students do have learning disabilities that have not been documented and they may meet admission criteria, and therefore may be admitted without such disclosure.
It would seem that pursuing education via our SPS online format is, in some respects, ideal for a student with learning disabilities. The student can, in many ways, control their learning environment. They can create a quiet, distraction free environment in which to attend to class material online. They can also read through materials or watch/listen to lectures in the online course as many times as needed to absorb the material. Because SPS programs are designed for students to demonstrate more than just acquired knowledge, testing is rarely used. Instead, assignments require students to summarize, analyze and apply new information in a variety of practical ways, through threaded discussions, written papers or projects or case studies.
On the other hand, SPS degree programs are accelerated by design, where one topic is covered intensively in a relatively short period of time. This format places a higher level of demand on students in terms of response time. While it may be possible to grant additional time, for example, to complete an individual written assignment, there is no substitute for active and timely participation in a threaded discussion. Much of the learning comes from analyzing and commenting on classmates' responses, so posting comments later or at the end of a discussion is not feasible. While Hope is committed to making whatever reasonable accommodations possible to support an individual student's learning, they are ultimately the best judge as to whether or not a more traditional 15-week semester format might be better suited to their learning style and needs.
Should a student with a professionally documented learning disability enroll in the School of Professional Studies, the following specific accommodations may be given. Each case will be evaluated individually based on the documented learning disability.
- In the rare cases where a timed exam is used in a module, additional time may be granted. The amount of additional time will be negotiated between student and instructor.
- Additional time may be granted from the deadlines noted in each course to submit any individual written assignment or project including journal entries, reaction/reading papers, homework problems, etc. Additional time on each assignment should not exceed 1 week, and additional time will not extend the overall end date for the course.
- The Operations Manager for the SPS program can arrange, at the student's request, for them to receive their books/audiotapes/videos in advance of regular distribution.
- Our bookstore manager routinely investigates, with each publisher, if any of our required textbooks are available on audiotape. Any texts that are available in this form can be provided. We are unable to provide for having books recorded onto audiotape. However, this does not preclude an individual student from accessing available government or community funds for such services should they be essential to their success, and Hope will do whatever we can to assist.
Counseling Services
Counseling services are available to Hope students on the Fullerton main campus through the Hope Counseling Center. Licensed counselors or Master's Degree students under supervision provide all counseling. A student's insurance and financial means are taken into consideration when establishing counseling fees; call (714) 681-7225.
Campus Ministries
The Office of Campus Ministries provides programs that encourage spiritual formation and Christian service. While the primary participants in these programs are often the traditional undergraduate students, a number of the community outreach events and short-term ministry trips may be of interest to all Hope students. To inquire about church and community service opportunities; call (714) 879-3901 ext. 1403.
Spiritual Formation: Faculty and staff are readily available to mentor and advise students one-on-one regarding issues of spiritual formation. In addition, students are encouraged to become actively involved in the life of a local congregation. The Office of Campus Ministries is a resource for information and directions regarding churches in the area.
Christian Service: There are numerous opportunities for service experience at the University. Two programs strongly suggested for participation by School of Professional Studies students are:
Resurrection Celebration- AMOR Ministries is a non-profit organization that builds homes for impoverished families in Mexico. Hope provides students to serve as team leaders for church youth groups during the Resurrection Celebration campaign each Spring.
Service On Saturday (S.O.S) offers a variety of community volunteer service projects that permit students to have a wide range of service experiences, including graffiti removal, serving at a soup kitchen, befriending the elderly at a rest home, and more.
International Student Services
The main purpose of the International Student Services (ISS) Office is to assist international students in achieving the greatest possible benefit from their educational experience. Assistance is given to address both admissions and integration issues. Call the ISS Office at (714) 879-3901 ext. 1698.
CSUF Recreation Membership
An Affiliate University Recreation Membership with CSUF is available to Hope faculty, staff and students at an annual rate of $75 per person, or $110 for family use. This membership entitles the individual to access indoor and outdoor facilities, including 2 outdoor pools, 12 tennis courts, jogging track, athletic fields, gymnasium, weight room, and 6 indoor racquetball courts. Members are also entitled to discounted prices on instructional classes, such as aerobics, ballet, tennis, martial arts, and more.
In addition, the CSUF University Center provides opportunities for bowling, billiards, and arcades, which are open to the public.
