EDU5100 Foundations of Education (3)
Introduces and explores servant leadership from a Christian viewpoint. The necessity of having a moral purpose as an educator is a fundamental assumption of the program. This course also examines the theory and research of historical, philosophical and psychological foundations of education. Required for Master of Education and SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential Program.
EDU5150 Dynamics of Christian Community and Ministry (3)
Cross listed as BIB6120 Dynamics of Christian Community & Ministry. The biblical dynamics necessary for redemptive Christian community will be explored. The nature of ministry by members of the community will be defined and advocated with a view to effectiveness in mission. Required for Master of Education Program.
EDU5200 Data Analysis (3)
This course must be taken either as a prerequisite to EDU6910 Introduction to Research. The course provides knowledge of statistical tools used for decision making within the educational community. Quantitative decision making techniques are used for forecasting results, and interpreting the results of standardized tests that are often used in American schools. Required for Master of Education program.
EDU5330 Diversity: Language Acquisition and Methods (3)
Examines historical perspective, research and theories of second language acquisition and methods of instruction for English language development for speakers of other languages. Topics include lesson planning utilizing appropriate ELD and SDAIE strategies, classroom environment, management, diagnosis and assessment strategies. A minimum of 10 hours of public school observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. Required for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5340 Methods of Language Arts and Reading Instruction (3)
Examines research, theory, methods and materials for teaching reading in grades K-8. Topics include a variety of approaches and techniques for phonemic awareness, systematic phonics instruction and reading comprehension strategies. Emphasis on the interconnected nature of reading, writing, listening, speaking and the use of the State English-Language Arts Framework and Curricular Content Standards in short-term and long-range planning. Course is designed to prepare students for the RICA. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. Required for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5350 Methods of Math and Science Instruction (3)
Examines research, theory, methods and materials for mathematics and science instruction in grades K-8. Topics include diagnosis/prescription and the use of varied methodology/materials for providing successful learning experiences for students. Emphasis on the use of the State Mathematics, Science, and Health Frameworks and Curricular Content Standards in short-term and long-range planning. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. EDU5360 Methods of Integrated Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Schools (3)
Examines the development of integrated instruction in creating Standards-Based Thematic units, incorporating learning theory/processes, domains of effective pedagogy, and ongoing assessment strategies. Topics will include study of California State Curricular Frameworks and Curricular Content Standards with an emphasis on Social Studies, Physical Education, and the Visual and Performing Arts. The course will include the development of a unit of study emphasizing content, materials, methodology, and assessment. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. EDU5410 Special Populations (3)
Examines history, and traditions of cultural groups and classroom practices and materials that promote equality as well as one's own beliefs and values. Examines strategies for learning about others and techniques for assessing multicultural education programs. Target populations include gate students and special needs students with diverse backgrounds. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. EDU5520 Transforming Schools (3)
Calls for a definition of basic education in the twenty first century. The definition will follow study of technology's impact and influence on children, the skills needed to continue to learn, and the ways in which children receive information. The concepts developed will frame the work to follow. Elective for Master of Education program.
EDU5540 Educational Administration (3)
An advanced course in educational administration focusing on competency areas such as organizational theory and practice, fiscal management, human relations, human and material resources, management, and strategies to achieve goals and objectives. Elective for Master of Education program.
EDU5600 Mainstreaming Diverse Students (3)
This course is designed to equip the regular classroom teacher with instructional tools and strategies to facilitate learning for the special education/exceptional student who has been mainstreamed into the regular classroom. Required for Ryan Multiple Subject Clear Credential.
EDU5610 Contemporary Issues in Education (3)
In this course, students examine several of a broad range of contemporary topics. Examples of possible topics are strategic management, institutional advancement, societal factors affecting education, board-administration relationship, standardized testing, educational technology, and legal aspects of development. Elective for Master of Education program.
EDU5620 Computer Education for Teachers (3)
This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of computers-technology, system components, telecommunications, and networking-and their application to the classroom environment. Required for Multiple Subject Clear Credential.
EDU5625 Technology for Teachers (3)
This course is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of personal computers and their use by teachers in a school setting. It emphasizes the use and evaluation of software and its integration into curricular areas. Includes the Internet and WWW, the use of productivity software, technology tools for teachers and multimedia in the classroom. Prerequisite for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5630 Health Education for Teachers (3)
This course studies the physiological and sociological health foundations of nutrition, organ interactions, and the abuse of alcohol, narcotics, drugs, and tobacco. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as other emergency first aid processes are taught. Required for Ryan Multiple Subject Clear Credential.
EDU5640 Issues in Education During Mid-Childhood and Adolescent Years (3)
This course addresses mid-childhood and adolescent development as it applies to and impacts educational and classroom needs. ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, behavior management, and other topics will be addressed as they pertain to the classroom and other educational settings. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. Prerequisite for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5810 Student Teaching (5)
Student Teaching is designed to allow the candidate to experience the daily responsibilities of running a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate. The teacher credential candidate practices under the expert monitoring of a Master Teacher. Course must be taken with EDU5910. Required for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5820 Introductory Practicum for Elementary Teachers (3)
This course is an introduction to public elementary school teaching. The impact of a changing society, particularly in urban areas, on students' and teachers' classroom experience will be emphasized. A minimum of 10 hours of reading instruction observation in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate is required. Prerequisite for the SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5890 Advanced Student Teaching (5) (Must be taken with EDU5911)
All day teaching assignment in a classroom(s) with at least 25% students from a diverse culture, linguistic, ethnic, or socio-economic background different from that of the teacher credential candidate. Required for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5910 Student Teaching Seminar (2)
Must be taken with EDU5810 and EDU5890. In a seminar format, students reflect on their weekly teaching experiences. Discussion focus topics include the following: classroom management, legal and ethical issues, available resources, and interview preparation. Required for SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential program.
EDU5911 Advanced Student Teaching Seminar (1)
A companion course that must be taken with EDU5890. In seminar format students reflect on their weekly teaching experiences. Discussion focus topics include the following: classroom management, legal and ethical issues, available resources, and interview preparation. Required for the SB2042 Multiple Subject Credential Program.
EDU5920 Special Topics in Education (3)
This course focuses on selected rotating topics dealing with various aspects of school administration. It is designed to make use of visiting scholars, adjunct and resident faculty whose special expertise enriches other aspects of the curriculum.
EDU6320 Curriculum Development and Instructional Design (3)
Students learn to build curriculum and instruction that induces powerful learning to occur. The course provides a framework to critically analyze educational belief systems and decision-making processes, practices found in traditional educational settings and modern learning organizations, and creation of a curricular benchmark. Required for the Master of Education program.
EDU6610 Financial Aspects of Education (3)
This course will examine the sources of school revenue and is designed to help prepare the student to develop, manage, and evaluate budgets and fiscal operations. Elective for Master of Education program.
EDU6620 Legal Aspects of Education (3)
This course reviews and analyzes legal issues, laws, cases, and executive orders related to students, faculty, boards, and training programs. Among others, issues relating to contract, tort, privacy, and employment dismissal will be discussed. Elective for Master of Education program.
EDU6910 Introduction to Research and Evaluation (3)
This course emphasizes the research and evaluation techniques primarily utilized in educational settings. Students specifically learn how to diagnose problems, construct samples, control variables, and collect and analyze data using statistical and other methodologies. At the end of the course, the student is required to submit a project design proposal for EDU6990. Required for the Master of Education program.
EDU6990 Thesis (3)
This course is a culmination of the work done in the education program. Projects will be varied in style, content, presentation, media, and format. The expectation is that the project will be an example of powerful learning for each person completing the Master of Education program. The research will complete each of the major components of a thesis as described in the Research Proposal completed in EDU6910. Required for the Master of Education program.
