Contract Majors

At PCC, a major is designed to prepare the student for a career or for appropriate graduate study in pursuit of that career and is intended to prepare the student for effective ministry within that professional context.

A major consists of 36 to 51 units, of which at least 24 are upper division.

A student desiring to declare a major will complete a Petition to Declare a Major (obtained from the Registrar), thereby communicating choice of major to the Registrar. The student will then be assigned an advisor for that major. The declaration of a major may be done from the very start of a student's undergraduate career, but it should be made no later than the end of the sophomore year. Some majors require a preliminary interview as part of the initial process of entering the major.

Students may select a major described in the university catalog or they may exercise one of two additional options:

  1. Contract Major: Such a major is comprised of a field of study in which at least half of the major courses are offered at PCC and in which PCC provides faculty in that field. It may also consist of a blend of PCC courses, selected with the guidance of a faculty advisor, that comprise a coherent program of study.
  2. Contract Program: While this option is technically counted as a Christian Leadership major, it is designed to lead to a career or specific graduate school experience which has "a high probability for Christian influence upon people and society." Under this option, students may pursue a block of at least 36 units of study of which at least 30 may be transferred to PCC from an approved institution. Six units must be taken at PCC. This option provides for individualized programs in academic areas otherwise unavailable at PCC. In such cases the University provides appropriate faculty advising and counseling.

Students wishing to pursue either a Contract Major or a Contract Program must petition the Academic Contracts Committee for approval with the help of a faculty advisor. This petition requires a statement of how such a program fits the PCC mission statement. The contract process should typically be completed and approved before 60 units towards the degree have been completed. Examples are listed below.

Contract Programs (Examples)

  • Communication
  • Radio/TV/Film
  • Kinesiology (Secondary Teaching)
  • Mathematics (Secondary Teaching)
  • Biological Science (Pre-Med)
  • Theatre Arts (Secondary Teaching)
  • English (Secondary Teaching)
  • Physical Therapy

Minors

Students may also pursue minors in most of the major studies areas offered by Pacific Christian College, exclusive of contracts. The minor is designed to supplement a student's major field of study by providing an additional area of concentration. Each minor is comprised of 21 units of study, typically with a minimum of 12 upper division units. With the guidance of an appropriate faculty advisor in the minor field, a student may declare a minor by completing and submitting a "Petition to Declare a Minor" form available from the Registrar's Office.
