Communication
COM2101 Writing for Mass Media (3)
Focuses on the principles and practices of writing for the major types of mass communication media. Course will cover basic writing skills such as content, organization, conciseness, and clarity. Prerequisite: ENG1100.
COM2200 Public Speaking (3)
Principles of communication as they occur in the day-to-day activities. Included will be topics such as verbal and nonverbal communication, listening skills, conversational adjustments, self-awareness, inter-cultural differences, and conflict resolution. Class will include various experiential activities.
COM2430 Production for Publication (1-3)
Learning by participating in the production process fo the student newspaper, The Hope International Tribune, and the Yearbook. The production process includes design, layout, photography, reportage, and varieties of writing and editing for publication.
COM3100 Advanced Communication (3)
Principles of persuasion in various contexts will be learned and practiced. Persuasion in interviewing, public speaking and debate will be addressed and a basic introduction to critical thinking will also be learned. Prerequisite: COM2200. Juniors and Seniors only.
COM3400 Mass Media in Society (3)
The nature of mass media, its power and effect on society, and its use in spreading the gospel.
COM4100 Communication Theories (3)
An advanced study of selected communication theories with an emphasis upon analysis and research. Prerequisites: COM2200, COM3100.
COM4110 Advanced Writing for Publication (3)
Leadership in the production process for the student newspaper, The Hope International Tribune, and the Yearbook. Leadership tasks may include supervising design and layout, organizing work and workers, taking management responsibilities for writing assignments, and final editing.
COM4120 Argument and Debate (3)
An introduction to the methods of critical inquiry, thinking, and advocacy. Identifies soundness of reasoning, fallacies of reasoning, the testing of evidence and evidence sources, the advancement of a reasoned position, the defense of the status quo, and the refutation of arguments. Includes the preparation, presentation, analysis, and evaluation of written and oral arguments. Prerequisite: COM2200.
COM4130 Small Group Communication (3)
Explores theories and research concerning leadership, membership, and procedures of institutional, social and psychotherapeutic groups. Prerequisites for Communication credits: PSY1100, COM2200 and COM3100 and/or consent of instructor.
COM4210 Inter-Cultural Communication (3)
Cross listed as ICS3200 Inter-Cultural Communication. Designed to enable the student to deal with the cultural dimension of communicating with the inter-ethnic community in American society and across cultures in international settings. Prerequisite: COM2200.
COM4300 Organizational Communication (3)
Looking at theory and practice, the course considers the relationship between communication and management practices and skills. The course emphasizes both macro and micro structures in interpersonal, small group, and inter-cultural business communication. Prerequisites: COM2200 and COM3100 or consent of instructor.
COM4800 Communication Internship (1-3)
Opportunities for appropriate on-site learning experiences, supervised and evaluated. Arranged with the approval of the Communications advisor.
COM4810 Communication Teaching Assistant (1-3)
Student will assist with tasks and projects assigned by the instructor of record for each course. Prerequisite: Junior/Senior standing with instructor's approval.
COM4900 Seminar in Communication (1-3)
Individual and small group studies of special interest in the field of communication.
