9/28/12 Fullerton, CA - “Hope for the Cure” Walks for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Once again this year, Hope International University will have a team participating in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer – OC Walk on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 8 a.m. The 5K walk will begin at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA. The HIU team, Hope For The Cure, is participating for the third straight year and is organized by Hope’s Marriage and Family Therapy program. In 2011, they had the support of 50 students, faculty, and staff.

When asked what sparked her department to participate in the Walk, Dr. Laura Steele, Dean of the College of Psychology and Counseling, responded, “It’s important to me that our department be not just focused on our own programs, but focused on the community at large. This is a way for us to represent those who need us to; we do it because we can, and we do it because we care about making a difference.”

Dr. Steele also said that participating in the OC Walk is one she feels is vital to students’ development as well. “I think that therapists are better when they have a broader range of experiences to pull from and being a part of events like this gives our students ways to connect with their clients over a common experience,” she said. “It’s important for them to be exposed to a wide range of experiences that will help them relate to future clients.”

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer began in 1993 and since then has raised more than $450 million toward fighting against breast cancer with the help of nearly 8 million walkers. Learn more about the organization and the OC Walk by clicking here.
