1/25/11 Fullerton, CA - Dongseo University & Hope International University Signed Partnership Agreement to Expand Relationship Between Universities

“Today marks the beginning of an expanded partnership between Dongseo and Hope,” said Dr. John L. Derry, President of Hope International University, as he and Dr. Dong Soon Park, President of Dongseo University (DSU) signed an agreement to deepen an existing partnership between the two universities. “Our two schools share a common heritage in the Christian Church and the mission of both schools is to prepare men and women to assume positions of responsible leadership in our world.”

Under this new agreement starting in September, HIU will welcome 100 DSU students per year to study alongside HIU students. This partnership expands upon a relationship the two universities have been forging for the past ten years. A number of DSU faculty and staff will have offices in the Lawson-Fulton Student Center on the HIU campus. Weili Lin, Director of International Student Programs, said “The hope is that this enriches their experience of living in America. Many students that come want to stay longer than a semester, and this is a great opportunity for them to do that.”

The signing ceremony was followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside of the offices that will be used by DSU faculty and staff. Young Kim, Director of Asian Community Relations/Affairs at the Office of U.S. Congressman Ed Royce, shared her remarks, “We hope that these students come back as future leaders and make the relationship between the U.S. and Korea even stronger.”

Following the ceremonies was a private luncheon with an invocation by Joo Chan Kim, College Pastor of Grace Ministries, Int., and remarks from Don Bankhead, Mayor Pro Tem, City of Fullerton; Sukhee Kang, Mayor, City of Irvine; Dr. Jin-Chul Jhung, Chairman of the Board, Dongseo University International Foundation; and Dr. John L. Derry, HIU President. Mayor Bankhead presented the President of DSU with a pin of the city saying “The City of Fullerton is proud to welcome you here, and we’ll do anything we can to support you.”

Among other dignitaries in attendance was Steve Spernak, Office of Orange County Supervisor Shawn Nelson, and Peter Han, Pastor of Irvine Korean Baptist Church.

The events concluded with an unveiling of the new DSU logo next to the HIU logo on the Nutwood Avenue sign. President Derry and President Park posed in front of the new signage along with several DSU students who are currently attending HIU.
