HIU Athletics Adds Golf to 2014-15 Season

Hope International University is pleased to announce the addition of men’s and women’s golf teams to its Athletics Department. The Golf team will begin competing in the 2014-15 academic year under the leadership of Head Coach Eric Thorson.

“In our continuing effort to grow our athletic program, we are proud and excited to announce the inaugural season of Men’s and Women’s Golf,” Athletic Director John Turek said. “Eric Thorson has been selected to get our new program up and running. Eric has great passion for both the game of golf and coaching. He brings a wealth of experience in coaching and recruiting at this level. We look forward to watching this program grow and compete under Coach
Thorson’s leadership.”

Bringing HIU’s Varsity athletic teams to 15, the Golf program, like other Royals teams, will compete in the Golden State Athletic Conference within the NAIA.

Thorson joins the Royals staff with nearly ten years of coaching experience, including three years as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at La Sierra University in Riverside. Under his guidance, the team achieved a program win record and also earned NAIA Scholar Team honors for their cumulative GPA of 3.66. Prior to coaching at LSU, Thorson headed up boys and girl high school basketball teams first at Orangewood Academy and later at St. Anthony’s High School. In 2000, his girl’s team at St. Anthony’s won the CIF Championship and Thorson was named CIF-SS Coach of the Year.

In addition to his coaching duties, Thorson serves as a Firefighter/Paramedic for the Garden Grove Fire Department. He is also a scratch golfer carrying a .3 index and counting three top ten finishes in the Pasadena City Championships and four North Net Fire Golf Association Club Championships.
