President Derry Takes the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

Hope International University’s President, Dr. John Derry, surprised the faculty, staff, and student body during his Convocation address to open the 2014-2015 school year. At the conclusion of his inspirational address, dressed in full academic regalia, he took the “Ice Bucket Challenge” to benefit ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The Ice Bucket Challenge, fueled by social media, has raised awareness and over $40 million in donations to fight ALS and fund research.

Save the Date for Spirit of Hope 2014

HIU’s annual Spirit of Hope Celebrity Concert & Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, September 27, in the Grand Ballroom at the Disneyland Hotel. Gala guests will enjoy an elegant evening of gourmet dining and live performances by recording artists Scott MacIntyre and HIU alum Tyrone Wells. President Dr. John L. Derry will present special awards to notable members of the HIU community and share an update on the university, including the status of HIU’s Ignite Hope Capital Campaign.

Tyrone Wells (’98) Featured in ParentingOC Magazine

Popular Christian recording artist/ songwriter and HIU alumnus Tyrone Wells (‘98) is featured on the June cover of ParentingOC Magazine. As part of the Father’s Day Edition, Wells’ article discusses the joys he experiences fathering his 2-year-old daughter Aria. He stresses the importance of being an “intentionally present” father and husband, especially in light of his demanding recording and touring schedule. Tyrone also describes how his faith is the main motivator and guide in all he does.

HIU Hosts High School Basketball Summer League

For the fifth consecutive year, Hope International University is hosting a High School Basketball Summer League. This year, 16 local high schools are participating in the league which runs from June 10- July 17. Players from 13 varsity teams, 13 junior varsity teams and 10 sophomore/freshmen teams compete each Tuesday and Thursday in HIU’s Darling Pavilion.

The Fullerton Children’s Repertory Theater (FCRT) continues its tradition of producing top Broadway shows with their upcoming performance of Les Misérables. The show will run from July 10 -19 at the Pacific Auditorium at Hope International University.

2014 HIU Golf Marathon Raises Record Amount for Student Scholarships

The 8th Annual Golf Marathon was held on Monday, May 19, at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. The 2104 event raised over $50,000 for the second consecutive year. This year’s fundraiser brought in a record $51,500. The event has now raised more than $350,000 since its inception in 2007.

Hope International University celebrated its 97th Commencement on Saturday, May 17, 2014. The over 200 graduates came from a student body of more than 1500 students representing 44 states and more than 20 countries.

Psychology Club Show Their Colors in Orange County Race

On Saturday, May 10th, HIU’s Psychology Club will participate in the Orange County Color Run. The Color Run is an un-timed, five-kilometer race in which participants are doused with different colors of special paint throughout the course.

HIU Hosts Taiwanese American Heritage Week Celebration on May 18

The 2014 Taiwanese American Heritage Celebration in Orange County will be held this year from May 4 to May 31. Taiwanese American Heritage Celebration is a part of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton declared the second week of May as Taiwanese American Heritage Week to promote cultural exchange and foster further understanding of Taiwanese Americans. It has become an important annual event in the United States.

Hope Community Enjoys a Day of Fun and Celebration

On Tuesday, April 15, Hope International University took a day off from the usual routines. All undergrad classes were cancelled and all campus offices closed at 9:30am to allow HIU students, staff, and faculty to take part in Spring Fever Day. In Memory of John Rowe: 1929-2014

We are saddened to announce the passing of longtime employee and friend of Hope International University, Dr. John Rowe. Dr. Rowe began serving HIU in 1967 and held a number of positions in his time here including Professor, Dean of Students, and Senior Advancement Officer. He was a friend and mentor to many, influencing the lives of generations of students, staff, faculty and members of our community. He passed away on April 7, 2014, just six weeks shy of his 85th birthday, but the effects of his ministry will be felt for many years to come.

HIU Hosts Society of Biblical Literature

Hope International University hosted a meeting of the Pacific Coast Region of the Society of Biblical Literature on March 30 and 31. For the second consecutive year, scholars from California, Arizona, Hawaii, and Nevada came to Hope to present and discuss papers regarding a variety of biblical and theological issues. Session categories included the Bible and the Ancient Near East, Judaism in the Greco-Roman world, the Hebrew Bible, and the New Testament.

Students Assist with Anaheim Ducks’ First Flight Event

The Hope International University College of Education sent 16 students to The Honda Center in February to assist with the Anaheim Ducks’ 14th annual First Flight event. First Flight is a free day of activities that are designed to help students think about math and science in new ways, using the ice hockey arena as a fun “classroom” and looking at the relationships between math, science, and hockey.

Students Devote Spring Break to AMOR Mission Trip

From March 31 to April 4, a group of HIU students will be joining AMOR Ministries to help build homes for needy families in Mexico. As part of AMOR’s “Project Barnabas,” approximately 20 students will be taking the role of servant-leaders for thousands of volunteers from around the country. In addition to construction work, they will have opportunities to cook in the team’s kitchens and participate in local ministries.

Shrek Charms Audiences at HIU

Playing to a packed theater, the cast of Shrek the Musical brought the hilarious and heartwarming story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on the Hope International University stage. The musical, which ran March 13 – 22, was a smash hit with adults and children and has become one of HIU’s most popular productions to date.

Psychology Faculty Selected to Present at Mid-year Conference

The Hope International University College of Psychology and Counseling is pleased to congratulate a faculty research team led by Dr. Thomas Frederick upon its selection to present at the 12th Annual Mid-Year Research Conference on Religion and SpiritualityThe team will present its research entitled Integrating Faith and Learning: An Initial Study of Undergraduate Psychology, Human Development, and Graduate Marriage and Family Therapy Students at Biola University’s Center for Christian Thought in April.

Kilgore is a Three-Time Men’s Basketball All-American

For the third time in his career, Senior Jeremy Kilgore was named an NCCAA All-American as announced today by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Office.  Kilgore averaged 13.6 points in his final collegiate campaign to earn NCCAA Second Team All-America status.

Rendon is NAIA and NCCAA All-American and Bauman Receives Honorable Mention

Senior Andrina Rendon has been named an All-American by both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) as announced by both national offices within the last two days.  Rendon was named to NCCAA First Team All-American and to the NAIA Second Team All-American.  Junior Brittany Bauman earned NAIA All-American Honorable Mention honors.

HIU Athletics Adds Golf to 2014-15 Season

Hope International University is pleased to announce the addition of men’s and women’s golf teams to its Athletics Department. The Golf team will begin competing in the 2014-15 academic year under the leadership of Head Coach Eric Thorson.

Men’s Volleyball Sweeps No. 1 Concordia Eagles

No.8 Hope International celebrated Senior Night in the Darling Pavilion by sweeping No. 1 Concordia (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) on Wednesday.  Junior Dominique Blonski had a huge match as he buried 16 kills with just one error for a .625 hitting night.  As a team, HIU did not have more than five hitting errors in any of the three sets.

The Hope International Tribune placed in the Best of Show competition at the Associated Collegiate Press 30th National College Journalism Convention Feb. 27 – March 3. This is The Tribune’s second national award in three years.

NAIA Nationals Women’s Basketball Bracket Announced

NAIA National Office announced the bracket today for next week's NAIA Women's Basketball DI National Championship in Frankfort, KY.  Hope International will face MidAmerica Nazarene on Thursday (3/20) at 9:30 am (PDT)/ 12:30 pm (EDT).  The games will be played at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Hope International And Xavier (LA) To Meet In NAIA Opening Round

The NAIA National Office announced the pairings for the 2014 Buffalo Funds NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship on Wednesday.  The Hope International men will be facing off with Xavier (LA) at 9:45 pm (CDT)/ 7:45 pm (PDT) on Thursday (3/20)- the last game to be played of the opening round.

Royals Win Historic Women’s Basketball GSAC Championship

On Tuesday night, Hope International University’s women’s basketball team won their first ever GSAC Championship when they defeated The Master’s College 64-59. The title is also the first of its kind won by any HIU sport in the University’s history.

For the first time in Hope International University history, our men’s and women’s basketball teams will both be competing for the GSAC Championship. The Royals will both play for the title at Vanguard University, Tuesday night. The women will face The Master’s College at 5 p.m. and then the men’s team takes on Vanguard at 8 p.m.

Royals Upset No.1 Vanguard, Advance To GSAC Championship

Hope International put forth the team effort of the year on Friday when they upset No.1 Vanguard in the GSAC Tournament Semifinals with an 80-76 win.  Senior Andrina Rendon scored 25 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.  Junior Krystyn Jacobs scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half to lead the comeback.  For Vanguard, Nicole Ballestero scored a GSAC record 53 points.

Men Head to GSAC Finals

Hope International Men's Basketball punched their ticket to their first ever GSAC Championship game with a 61-56 win over The Master's on Saturday.  The third seeded men will face top seeded Vanguard at their place on Tuesday for the GSAC Championship.  Junior Matt Green delivered a big night with 19 points aided by four three pointers.

Hope International held off a late charge from Concordia in the opening round of the GSAC Tournament on Thursday as they beat the Eagles 73-65.  The win will send HIU to the GSAC Tournament Semi-Finals for the second time in as many years.  Junior Matt Green and Sophomore Garrett Neilan both scored 20 points.

Unlike two weeks ago when Biola produced a second half surge that Hope International could not stop, on Wednesday, the Royals answered and pulled away for a 77-65 win.  Senior Andrina Rendon scorched the nets for 32 points while pulling down 10 rebounds.  Junior Brittany Bauman added 15 points.

God gave Zynette (Miraflor) Cohen a passion for helping families. She followed that calling to Hope International University and earned her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy (’07). Now she’s pursuing her passion as a coordinator for Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS).

96th Commencement Encourages Graduates to “Give Hope”

On Saturday, December 14, the HIU community celebrated as more than 100 graduates received their diplomas at the Fall 2013 Commencement ceremony. The graduating class came from a student body of over one thousand and was drawn from 27 states and more than 40 countries.

President Dr. John Derry often tells the story of Hope International University’s enduring dedication to growth and servitude.  He believes the essence of the University’s mission is to ignite a spark of hope, leading students toward their callings to serve the community, the nation, and the world.  In keeping with that legacy, at the 2013 Spirit of Hope Gala, Dr. Derry announced the kick-off of the Ignite Hope campaign, a five-year, $15 million campaign.

In 2000, Stephen Mercado retired from active service in the military. He had served for 20 years as a jet engine mechanic for aircrafts such as E2 Turbo prop Hawkeye, P-3, and EA6b Prowler and completed a tour as an instructor for the fleet pipeline teaching about power plants and related systems.
