Mentor Program

The Mentor program is designed to match a new international student with a student/faculty/staff/Hope community member.

Purpose of the Mentor Program

The mentoring program exists to...

  1. Help new international students adjust to.
    • Hope International University and
    • the United States through personal and social interactions
  2. Enhance international students' satisfaction with their university experience.
  3. Increase appreciation and awareness among domestic students, staff and faculty toward international cultures and languages.

Picture of the Mentor-Mentee Relationship

The mentor and mentee need to meet at least 3 times in the first month and then at least twice a month after that. The commitment is for at least one semester. After this commitment time, they can decide to continue meeting or not.

At the beginning of the Fall/Spring semester, the mentors will have a training time to get the necessary tools for helping their mentee.

Topics such as.

  1. intercultural communication,
  2. culture shock,
  3. cultural awareness,
  4. cultural adjustment, etc.

will be covered during the training so that the mentor will get a holistic perspective and understanding for being able to effectively mentor and help their mentee throughout the semester.

Testimonial

Here is a testimony by Jessica Nix, a former mentor to many of our international students.

"Growing up in Arizona all of my life gave me a very minute perspective of God's world. However, when I came to Hope I had the opportunity to stretch and change my perspective through the mentoring program at Hope. I went into the program thinking that it would be a great opportunity to get involved and serve others. However, while I have helped my mentees, they have been mentors to me in broadening my world perspective. I loved going to get coffee, tea, or food with my new found friends and listening to them."

Listening to my international friends was the biggest part of our friendship. I was able to hear about thier triumphs and struggles with school and about thier culture. Through this program I was able to realize a passion God has given me for working with people of other cultures and broaden my world perspective."
